Located off the southern coast of the South Island of New Zealand, Stewart Island is home to few humans but a great deal of wildlife. Birds that are becoming rarer on the large islands still live on Stewart Island. The Kiwi, the Weka, and the South Island Kaka are only a few of the diverse species that are scattered throughout. Approximately 85% of the island is the Rakiura National Park. Rakiura is Maori for "Land of the Glowing Skies" - probably for the sunrises, sunsets, and the Aurora Australis. Address: .
